The majority of Steve Monteith's ice hockey career was spent with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues from 1961 through 1969. A student on his way to earning degrees in commerce and law, he was the league's goal leader in 1964 and 1965. As of 2007, he still maintains the team's career scoring records, with 102 goals and 147 assists. He took two breaks from the team during this time, one during the 1962-1963 season when he played one game with the Toronto Neil McNeil Maroons of the Metro Toronto Junior Hockey League, and one to play with Team Canada at the 1968 Winter Olympics. At the tournament he played in seven games, scoring one goal, and brought home a bronze medal. He signed with the Orillia Terriers of the Senior Ontario Hockey Association in 1969, but retired from active play after two games with the team. Today, Steve is a highly experienced corporate and commercial law practitioner. Steve and his wife Bonnie have 3 sons. Away from the office Steve enjoys old-timer hockey, golf, and curling. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Stratford and is a past president. In addition, he is a past warden and board member of St. James Anglican Church, past president of the Stratford Country Club, past board member of the Stratford-Perth Family Y and Stratford Y Foundation, and a past director of the Stratford Cullitons Hockey Club. |
2015 - Craig Hartsburg - Hockey |
From the Stratford Beacon Herald: Craig Hartsburg went in as an athlete, joining his father, Bill, who coached the 1960-61 Stratford Braves junior C hockey team that was inducted into the Wall of Fame in 2013. "It's a great honour to be on the wall in the first place, but knowing my father is up there as well is pretty neat," Craig Hartsburg said. Hartsburg, who was the sixth overall draft pick in 1979, finished his NHL career with 413 points over 10 seasons with the Minnesota North Stars. Bill Hartsburg's dedication allowed that to happen. "From the time I could walk he had a rink in the backyard for me," Hartsburg said. "He coached hockey himself so he'd have me on the ice as a little guy skating around, passing pucks, or staying out of the way, encouraging me, directing me at times, teaching me and building me up when I was down, so he was the perfect hockey dad." Hartsburg, 55, is now an assistant coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets, but he still comes back to the Festival City each summer. "Stratford's my hometown and it's where my roots started," he said. "The foundation of my life as a hockey player and a person started here, and I can't thank the people of Stratford enough." |
2015 - Tim Taylor - Hockey |
From the Stratford Beacon Herald: Tim Taylor joined Craig Hartsburg as an inductee in the athlete category. "I guess I'm humbled, but I'm honoured obviously," he said. "When they called me and told me about it, with being inducted with Craig was a huge bonus. A person I looked up to and a family I looked up to was a bonus." The two-time Stanley Cup winner with Detroit and Tampa Bay thanked those who helped him along the way, from teammates to coaches to family. "I enjoyed every single moment of playing in the National Hockey League, and I enjoyed every single moment of being from Stratford, Ontario," Taylor, 46, said. "I'm very proud of where I come from. We're back here living and trying to recommit to the community and just being good citizens, I believe." Taylor's great aunt, Sylvia Fiddy, was a member of the Stratford Aces 1930 squad that was inducted into the team category the same night. "I didn't know she even played hockey or there was an Aces program until years ago," he said. "It's kind of neat to see (girls hockey) now. I hope the new Aces girls, when they come on board and their parents, they see a video like that (introducing the 1930 Aces) and see who pioneered the game and has given these girls different avenues and who created girls hockey originally in Stratford and they can see the history behind it." |
